This course, provided by Imam Sadiq Online Seminary and taught by Ustadh Ruhollah Rohani in 100 sessions, is the third volume and continuation of the three-course series on Al-Mantiq by the renowned scholar Muhammad Rida al-Muzaffar. It focuses on one of the most important sections of Islamic logic: al-Sinaʿāt al-Khams (الصناعات الخمس), or the Five Skills/Arts of Reasoning.
The course begins with an introduction to the Five Skills and the fundamentals of syllogistic reasoning (qiyās), examining the different types of propositions that constitute the material of syllogisms. Students explore certain propositions (al-Yaqīniyyāt), self-evident axioms (al-Badīhiyyāt), empirical propositions, mass-transmitted propositions, intuitive propositions, and innate propositions. The course also examines conjectures, commonly accepted propositions (al-Mashhūrāt), illusionary propositions (al-Wahmiyyāt), conceded propositions (al-Musallamāt), and accepted propositions (al-Maqbūlāt).
A substantial portion of the course is devoted to Burhān (demonstration), including its reality, definition, types, methods of acquiring demonstrative knowledge, intuitive reasoning, causes in Burhān Limmī, and the conditions required for premises to constitute a valid demonstration. Students are also introduced to essential predication and related logical principles.
The course then turns to Jadal (dialectic), covering its necessity, principles, premises, methods of questioning and answering, debate techniques, and the various Mawāḍiʿ (loci) used in argumentation. The principles and etiquette of debate are also discussed.
The final sections examine the remaining three skills: Khiṭābah (oration), poetry, and Mughālaṭah (fallacy). These lessons explore persuasive speech, analogy, imaginative propositions, the influence of poetry, and vocal and conceptual fallacies.
