Basic Islamic Seminary Lessons — Arabic Morphology (Sarf)
This course offers a structured, beginner-friendly introduction to Arabic morphology (*ṣarf*), the foundational discipline of Islamic seminary education that examines how Arabic words are built, transformed, and derived from root letters. Designed for students with little or no prior background in Arabic grammar, it provides the essential toolkit for understanding the Qur'an, hadith, and classical Islamic texts at the word level—before moving on to syntax (*naḥw*) and more advanced studies.
The course begins by establishing the building blocks of Arabic words: the triliteral and quadriliteral roots, the distinction between base letters and additions, and the classification of words into nouns, verbs, and particles. Students then progress systematically through the major morphological patterns (*awzān*), learning to recognize and produce forms such as *faʿala*, *faʿʿala*, *afʿala*, *tafaʿʿala*, *tafāʿala*, and *istafʿala*, along with their associated meanings and uses.
A central component of the course is the conjugation system. Students will master the conjugation of the past tense (*māḍī*), present tense (*muḍāriʿ*), and imperative (*amr*), including the derived verb forms (*al-afʿāl al-mazīda*) and their semantic nuances. The course also covers noun morphology: participles (active and passive), verbal nouns (*maṣādir*), and common patterns for place, instrument, and intensity nouns.
Throughout the course, each lesson combines clear explanations with worked examples drawn from Qur'anic vocabulary, so students see morphology applied directly to sacred texts rather than as abstract theory. Regular exercises, translation drills, and parsing practice reinforce each concept, and review sessions consolidate learning before progressing to new material.
By the end of the course, students will be able to identify root letters, recognize common morphological patterns, conjugate basic verbs across the three tenses, derive and analyze nouns from verbal roots, and use a dictionary effectively by reducing words to their roots. They will also gain the skills needed to parse words encountered in the Qur'an and hadith with greater accuracy and confidence.
This course is ideal for madrasah students beginning their seminary journey, adult learners seeking a structured foundation in Arabic, and anyone preparing for more advanced studies in *naḥw*, *balāghah*, or Qur'anic exegesis. No prior Arabic knowledge is required beyond familiarity with the Arabic alphabet and basic reading skills.
Join us to build a solid, seminary-style foundation in Arabic morphology—one root, one pattern, and one word at a time.
