Science of Hadith, taught by ustadh Sayed Mohammad Baqer Qazwini, introduces the history, classification, transmission, and evaluation of hadith. The course examines how hadith reports are transmitted and assessed, with particular attention to the chain of transmission, narrator reliability, authenticity, solitary reports, and the development of Shia and Sunni hadith sources.
History and Transmission of Hadith
The course begins with the history of hadith and examines the relationship between the text (Matn) and chain of transmission (Sanad). It discusses Mutawatir reports and different types of solitary reports (khabar al-wahid), followed by an introduction to the main classifications of hadith, including authentic, good, dependable, and weak reports.
Chains of Transmission and Narrator Reliability
Several sessions focus on Sanad and narrator evaluation. The course examines different types of chains, methods for authenticating narrators, and the criteria used for accepting hadith reports. It also discusses the science of Rijal and some of the earliest sources used in evaluating transmitters.
Hadith Sources and Development
The course explores the historical development of hadith literature, including the prohibition of recording hadith, the major stages of Sunni hadith, and the development of Shia hadith encyclopedias. It also examines questions concerning the transmission and paraphrasing of hadith.
Solitary Reports and Other Types of Narrations
The course provides a detailed discussion of Khabar al-Wahid (solitary reports), including different types and questions concerning their validity. It also examines Modhmar (anonymous) reports and the criteria scholars use when assessing such narrations.
Hadith Fabrication and Its Motives
A significant section of the course examines hadith fabrication and the different motives that contributed to the creation and transmission of fabricated reports. These include political, sectarian, and social motives, as well as the issue of Ghuluw (extremism) in religious traditions.
General Authentications
The course concludes with discussions of general authentications and their role in evaluating the reliability of narrators and hadith reports. Together, these topics provide learners with a foundation for understanding how hadith is studied, classified, and evaluated within the Islamic scholarly tradition.
