Intro to Rijal Studies

Intro to Rijal Studies, taught by Sayed Hussain Qazwini, introduces the principles and methods used to study the reliability of hadith narrators in Islamic scholarship. The Need for Rijal Studies

The course begins by examining why Rijal Studies is necessary and addresses the Akhbari claim concerning the need for or authority of Rijal scholarship. It then explores the role and authority of Rijali scholars and the importance of expertise in evaluating narrators.

Experts and Mass Authentications

Several sessions focus on the experts on Rijal and the concept of mass authentication (tawthiq). The course examines important examples and sources used in discussions of narrator reliability, including Kamil al-Ziyarat and Tafsir al-Qummi.

Ibn Abi Umayr and Other Classical Sources

The course discusses Maraseel Ibn Abi Umayr and the arguments surrounding their reliability. It also examines other forms of mass authentication and studies figures and sources such as Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isa al-Ash'ari, the companions of Imam Sadiq (a), Nawader al-Hikma, and Risala al-Adadiya.

Indicators of Reliability

The final sessions focus on indicators of narrator reliability, bringing together the principles and examples discussed throughout the course. These discussions provide learners with a foundation for understanding how scholars evaluate narrators and assess the reliability of hadith transmitters.
