Sayed Hassan Qazwini

Sayed Hassan Qazwini is a prominent Shia scholar, educator, author, and community leader in the United States. Born in 1964 in the holy city of Karbala, Iraq, he comes from a distinguished family of Islamic scholarship and religious service. He is the son of Ayatullah Sayed Mortadha Qazwini, a respected Shia scholar and religious figure whose family has a long history of serving the teachings of Islam and the Ahlul Bayt.

His religious education began after his family relocated to Iran. In 1980, he entered the Islamic Seminary of Qom, where he spent twelve years pursuing traditional Islamic studies. He completed his seminary education in 1992, developing a strong foundation in Islamic jurisprudence, Qur'anic commentary, and other branches of Islamic scholarship. During his years in Qom, he was also involved in the publication of the Islamic journal An-Nibras and authored works in the field of Islamic studies.

In late 1992, Sayed Hassan Qazwini moved to the United States and began his religious and educational work among Muslim communities there. He initially served in Los Angeles, where he was involved with the Azzahra Islamic Center founded by his father. He later became increasingly active in the Muslim community in Michigan and, in 1997, began serving at the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn.

During his eighteen years at the Islamic Center of America, Sayed Hassan Qazwini became widely known for his religious lectures, educational programs, and work with Muslim youth. He was particularly active in developing programs for younger generations and promoting their participation in community life. His outreach also extended beyond the Muslim community, as he became involved in interfaith dialogue and regularly addressed audiences at churches, universities, and other public institutions.

Over the course of his career in the United States, he has lectured at numerous universities and religious and civic institutions, including Harvard University, Yale University, Georgetown University, and Rutgers University. His public engagements have focused on explaining Islamic teachings, addressing misconceptions about Islam, and encouraging constructive dialogue among people of different faiths. His work in interfaith relations and civic engagement has also brought him into contact with American political and governmental institutions.

In 2015, Sayed Hassan Qazwini founded the Islamic Institute of America in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. The institute was established as a center for Islamic education, community development, spiritual programs, and interfaith engagement, and has grown into an institution serving families from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Its programs include religious education, Qur'an classes, youth activities, community services, and interfaith initiatives.

Sayed Hassan Qazwini is also an author whose writings address Islamic belief, religious practice, Qur'anic interpretation, and the experience of Muslims in America. Among his best-known works is *American Crescent: A Muslim Cleric on the Power of His Faith, the Struggle Against Prejudice, and the Future of Islam and America*, in which he reflects on his religious journey and the challenges and opportunities facing Muslims in the United States. His other publications include works on Islamic teachings, the Qur'an, and the life and ethics of the Prophet Mohammad (s).

His public profile has extended well beyond the local Muslim community. He has appeared in and been interviewed by major American and international media outlets, including CNN, NPR, BBC, Voice of America, and major newspapers. He has also participated in international conferences and interfaith gatherings in various parts of the world, representing Muslim-American perspectives and contributing to discussions on religion, diversity, and peaceful coexistence.

In recognition of his public influence and community leadership, Sayed Hassan Qazwini was included in 2011 among the world's 500 most influential Arabs. He has also been invited to participate in discussions with U.S. government institutions on issues concerning religion, diversity, and Muslim-American communities.

Today, Sayed Hassan Qazwini continues his work in Islamic education, scholarship, community leadership, and interfaith dialogue. Through his lectures, publications, and institutional work, he remains active in promoting Islamic learning and encouraging greater understanding and cooperation among diverse religious and cultural communities in the United States and beyond.
